The fact that Sam grows to pity Gollum as much as Frodo at the end of the last book is a crucial plot point. Nor does Frodo think of Gollum exactly the same as Sam. Over the last two months alone, publishers have apologized for the half-baked states of big-time games including The Last of Us Part 1, Redfall, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. Gollum returns to the fore after he is captured at Henneth Annun, as in the film, but then nearly repents (in the book) until Sam confronts him. Some of that over-the-top backlash against Gollum may be hyperbolic or a heat-of-the-moment reaction, but the frustration with botched game launches is understandable. Therefore we can assume that following Gollum's escape from Thranduil during the orc attack on Mirkwood he fled back to the Misty Mountains. At this stage they would have been attempting the climb on Caradhras. I'm a fan of the Lord of the Rings series. Therefore Gollum would have begun following them on January 11th, two days prior to them entering Moria. "Release the patch," faceless wrote in response to the apology on Steam. A few take a more nuanced approach to the situation, but there are clearly limits to how much patience remains. Predictably, the reaction to the apology is also ugly, with many accusing Daedalic of either incompetence-pushing Gollum out the door without knowing what a state it was in-or corruption-knowing what a state it was in and pushing it out the door anyway.
